When you’re small nothing fits. No – not me – I’m doing quite well in the weight department thank you very much, but Sierra, on the other hand is tiny. Have you ever seen a 4-5lb baby? They are incredibly small. (I keep meaning to take a picture of her next to a Teddy Bear so we can monitor her growth – btw – great idea Kimmie!). In the hospital, we had to do a special car seat test that’s only done on pre-term babies. They asked me to dress her and buckle her in her car seat for 90 min while a Respiratory Therapist (RT) monitored her breathing. They were shocked when all of the outfits I had packed in my hospital bag were all too big for her. Like hello – I wasn’t exactly planning on having a preemie – I don’t think that anyone really does. The criticism by the RT brought me to tears.
Once we brought her home, we had to dress her – we could no longer get away with double swaddling her with only a diaper on underneath. Her 0-3 mos sleepers were (and still are) way too big. Her feet slip out of the bottem of her sleepers, and then her legs get stuck in the crotch. That’s when the fun begins. She wails and wails and wails. She’s not hungry. She’s not dirty. She’s not cold. She’s not hot. WTF? So I bought some pink yarn that first week, and tied her feet into the bottem of her sleepers. Oh and how I would cry and cry and cry as I tied her feet in. My poor baby – too small for clothes! I felt so guilty for bringing her into this cruel world that discriminates against small people even before they’re a week old.
But alas! The world isn’t so cruel afterall! First, my cousin Kim came to the rescue! She gave Sierra a bag FULL of preemie sleepers! And they were pink too! Then, my friend Barb gave her another bag FULL of newborn sleepers! So now, all is good in this world – Sierra’s clothes fit, and I no longer cry every time I dress her.
