Madagascar and Taking Back My House

Posted by Janice On November - 10 - 2008

Wow! What a weekend! Ours was busy, busy, busy! How was yours?

Brooke’s illness that I wrote about on Thursday continued on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. With each day she improved a little bit until Sunday night when she finally was completely herself again – complete with an appetite. In between changing her oodles of crappy diapers and doing loads of laundry this weekend, I actually managed to be quite productive – which absolutely shocked me!

On Saturday my parents came over (as usual) to play spoil their beloved grand daughters. When they arrived Sierra was moping around the house, Rob was hibernating in the Master bedroom and Brooke and I were outside raking leaves. Brooke followed them in, and I stayed outside raking 4 bags worth of leaves and enjoying the solitude. (Before I had kids raking leaves would have been considered work, now it’s a chance to be alone). My parents stayed and helped me entertain the kids all day while Rob continued to hibernate. (Truthfully he was down for the count with whatever Brooke had). At dinner time my parents left, and shortly after Rob began to feel better. I was very glad that he was feeling better because that meant that I could go to the Epicure Party at my friend’s house after all!!! Yay! Woo Hoo!! Girls Night Out!

On Sunday Rob and I were discussing how when I was a little girl, all of my toys were in the basement. The basement was my playroom that I shared with my brother. We rarely ever picked up the toys and we could be as messy as we wanted, as only kids came down there. Rob asked why we hadn’t adopted the same philosophy. To be honest it had never occurred to me before, Sierra and Brooke are so young (3 and 1) that having them near me so I can break up their fights while I cook dinner each night seems to make sense to me, but tripping over toys all the time doesn’t. Maybe it also didn’t occur to me because for the 1st two years of Sierra’s life we didn’t have a basement? Either way, two hours later, all of the toys from my playroom/dining room were happily relocated to their new home in the basement. Sierra and Brooke had fun helping because they found toys they hadn’t seen in ages, and I was able to sort out all of the baby rattles etc. to be put away in case we ever need them again. I also placed the play kitchen, doll cradle and play vacuum in a “Princess Castle” in the basement. The girls then had a blast playing house, getting dressed up, going shopping with their babies etc… While the kids and I were cleaning/playing, Rob hung up a coat rack in our front hallway so that we wouldn’t have piles of jackets all over the entrance – I hate tripping over them on my way into the house. Essentially we spent 1/2 of the day taking back the house! Now it looks like somewhat civilized people live here. Note: I said somewhat civilized :)

Later that afternoon, while Brooke took a nap, Sierra and I had a date. We went to the movies together to see Madagascar 2. It was really cute. Some parts of it were scary for Sierra, mostly because without realizing it, Rob and I have completely sheltered her from violence. Parts of it Sierra didn’t understand, and I would recommend the movie only for parents with “older” children (ie: 6 and up). The only TV channel we ever allow Sierra to watch is Treehouse: Dora, WonderPets, Bob The Builder, the Wiggles, Little Bear etc… so she’s never seen guns, even if it was just a hunter. Just over 1/2 way through the movie Sierra wanted to go home. I encouraged her to stay and held her hand. By the end of the movie Sierra was excitedly singing: “We like to move it, move it. We like to move it, move it” and dancing around. She seemed to really enjoy the one on one attention and her special date with mommy.

After the movie we all headed out to a birthday party at an indoor playground. The kids ran around for 2 hours, vetoed dinner and ate enough cake to make up for what they lacked in dinner. Then later in the night I paid the price for staying through the movie, as Sierra confidently came to my room at 1:45 am, with her pillow under her arm and told me she couldn’t sleep and that she was going to sleep with me. Toss, turn, toss, turn, kick, kick, kick. 2 hours later she was still wasn’t sleeping and Brooke was also awake. Oh the joys of parenthood!

So that was my uber busy, yet productivve weekend. How was yours? A little more relaxing perhaps?

I just ran around to kids activies, did some furniture shopping and threw out a ton of stuff. We’re working on ‘taking back our house’ here too. It’s a lot of work, but I’m hoping in the end it’ll be worth it.

Sounds like your weekend was much more productive than mine! Congrats!!

WOW! What a busy bee you were this weekend.
My weekend was nowhere near as productive. On Sat. my “BOYS” wanted to hide out from me and go hang out with the “GIRL” across the road. Go figure! Then Sunday a couple loads of laundry and we also went to see Madagascar 2! The boys really enjoyed it, so I guess I had a great time. Now they want to go see “Bolt” in 2 weeks when it comes out. Still got lots of things I need to get done … but knowing me I wil find a way to put them off a while longer!

We quote the original movie quite a bit in our house and the kids are anxious to see it. We’ll take them as a family to see it when they earn the right to see it!

Good for you to move the toys to one location. We have done the same thing. Also, we have plastic bins or wooden chest for large groups of toys and we make them put them away in the big bins as a way for them to clean up after themselves. The big bins makes it much easier for them and they don’t seem to mind.

Glad to hear that things are going well…

About Me

This blog is about me – Janice, a wife, mother, employee, runner, softball player, internet addict and a completely obsessed New Kids On The Block fan. My blog title is about my running, as at the time this blog began back in 2004 I was a running mother-to-be, training for a 1/2 marathon. Part way through the pregnancy running became too uncomfortable for me leading me to slowly back off on my running. Now a days “Mom On The Run” is a reflection of how busy life has become caring for 2 completely adorable, yet “spirited” little girls while my hubby travels A LOT for business, though I do still run on occasion.
