The Dawn of a New "Era"

Posted by Janice On May - 5 - 2009

This post title has so many meanings for us these days…

Back on Earth Day, I took the kids outside with plastic bags to pick up garbage from our neighbourhood.  Several kids from our street joined us and helped out.  One little girl that joined us lives across the street, and is a year older than Sierra.  Sierra and her hadn’t had much opportunity to mingle since we moved here 2 yrs ago.  The girl’s mom and I had talked about having the girls hang out together, but it just never seemed to happen – until our Earth Day celebration.  As the weather has become nicer, we’ve been seeing less and less of Sierra – she’s been hanging out at this little girl’s house, or playing in our backyard with her.  Tonight I even had to look up her phone number because I called Sierra in for dinner, and this little girl followed Sierra in and made herself at home in my kitchen.  I think I’m going to have to start stocking more food over here…

We call almost 4 yo Sierra, “Era”.  Brooke can’t pronounce the “S” in Sierra’s name and has been calling her “Era” since about October. Shortly after we also began to call her “Era”.  This newfound independence from us that Sierra has been enjoying with her new friend is like the Dawn of a New Era – she’s happier than we’ve seen her in years and is much much easier to get along with.  As she prepares to enter kindergarten this fall, we’re finding that we’re entering a whole new phase/era – Our “Era” is now a little girl – complete with friends, playdates and a full social calendar.

But that’s not the only new era we’re entering over here…

Time for my good news:

I got a new job – I start March 25 for a neighbouring municipality in a position that is a step above what I’m doing now!

I’ve worked in this capacity before, but it was a 2 yr contract which ended when I had Sierra.   (Having Sierra early ended that contract early).  At the end of my maternity leave with Sierra I took a step back in my career for a job 5 min away from home (if the daycare wasn’t 5 km away, I could totally walk to work) knowing full well we were planning on having a 2nd baby.  That job was in my field, but not at the same level I was used to working at.  Less responsibility, less prestige etc… Since July I’ve been looking for a new, more challenging position.  My baby days are probably over, so its time to pick up my career where I left off.  This may also be a contributing factor in the “fog” and “clouds” I’ve been living in this past year – not feeling challenged, being turned down for 3 other jobs I interviewed for etc… It’s been a one huge blow after blow to my ego.  I never realized how hard it would be to step forward after taking a step back.

But its now a new era – I’m getting back in my game – I’m getting more rest, eating healthy, exercising and now – working a new job!  Yay!

That’s exciting! I assume that it comes with more pay as well. I am just about to start my job hunt. I’m finished my degree but have no relevant work experience since I’ve been too busy being a mom.

I’m also looking forward to my kids getting more independent (but not too much!).

One reason “Era” has a busy social life is because she crashes parties! She crashed a birthday party of a 2 yr. old boy whose grandparents live next door to her on Saturday afternoon. The were having a family birthday party for him. She disappeared while Janice & I went into the house for a minute or 2. When we came out; there was no sign of Sierra. We heard children’s voices coming from the neighbour’s back yard and there she was right in the thick of things kicking around a soccer ball with the other kids. Long story short, they let her stay and enjoy the party and she even enjoyed a hambuger and cake. Cheeky little devil!

I’m happy for you that you got that job you were after and I wish you much success!

    Luv ya! :-)

About Me

This blog is about me – Janice, a wife, mother, employee, runner, softball player, internet addict and a completely obsessed New Kids On The Block fan. My blog title is about my running, as at the time this blog began back in 2004 I was a running mother-to-be, training for a 1/2 marathon. Part way through the pregnancy running became too uncomfortable for me leading me to slowly back off on my running. Now a days “Mom On The Run” is a reflection of how busy life has become caring for 2 completely adorable, yet “spirited” little girls while my hubby travels A LOT for business, though I do still run on occasion.
