Wow! I can’t believe it’s Sunday night already! Where did the weekend go? It was like a small town, blink and you miss it!
We had a ton of fun, though it didn’t start off well. Oy! Sierra is back into the parrot thing she did when she was 2.5 yrs old – saying everything 5 times, interrupting, whining and being downright rude and obnoxious. It’s so irritating, even though i know she’s *just* looking for attention. She did this ALL weekend long! Once or twice I can take – but the whole weekend? Holy smokes – somebody shoot me now!
Saturday morning my parents invited us to the “Poultry Festival”. Yes – I laughed too – I was like, the wha….? You want me to go where? Oh – and you want the kids to come too? Are you insane?
But I sucked it up and went anyway ’cause Hubby had a ton of yardwork to do and I didn’t feel like “parenting” alone all day.
Poultry Festival was actually fun (oh, and it was free – so that was cool too). We drove an hour to Smithville, ON and parked in the first parking lot we found. Then we took the “shuttle” to the fairgrounds where “Poultry Fest” was a-happening. (The “shuttle” was a freaking tractor!). The kids LOVED the “shuttle”. And they were even more excited to see Opa waiting for them. (They love Opa & Oma).
We bounced, we watched jugglers, we did crafts, we bounced some more, we shook hands with giant chickens and we ate… chicken of course! The Chicken fingers were quite good.
Afterwards my parent met us back at our place for a swim and dinner (more chicken, thanks to Colonel Sanders).
After dinner Hubby took off with my dad to go watch the North American Cup at a nearby racetrack. (Horse racing for those not familiar with the North American Cup).
It was then that I conveniently remembered that I promised Sierra she and I would “go camping” this weekend – camping in the backyard in a REAL tent! (Hey – when you’re 4, that IS camping). I pitched the tent with the help of my mom, who has never pitched a tent in her life, but did amazingly well for a first timer *wink*. Then we unzipped the door at watched the kids crawl in and out of it as excited as can be over and over and over for an hour. Want to entertain your kids? Then pitch a tent. Nothing is more exciting apparently.
Here’s a few pics:
I promised her she could sleep in it and she truly tried but unfortunately it was a gorgeous night and a lot of our neighbours were also enjoying the night. At 9:45 pm a sleepy 4 yr old turned to me and said, “Mommy – it’s too noisy – can I sleep in my own bed?”. I happily agreed.
Sunday was rainy and miserable, so it was a good thing we didn’t sleep in the tent. As payback for parenting alone yesterday, Hubby took the girls to the mall for 3 hours so I could do some housework and sort out the ever growing mounds of clothing the kids have grown out of. I’m sure weeds grow slower. It was really nice to have the place to myself and I really wish I could say I did something exciting, but alas – I did exactly as I had planned. I sorted and cleaned and I still have a ton of stuff left to sort and clean.
Hubby came back with a big ol’ bag of clothes from Old Navy (he is such a sucker for that place – oh and a sucker for his girls too). He bought them the cutest little dresses, flip flops and sunglasses. Sierra is wearing her glasses in the middle picture above).
The rest of the afternoon and evening was spent assuring Sierra that she didn’t need to say everything 5 times, or interrupt people.
The weekend went by far too fast, but thankfully we only have 2 work days until Canada Day – I could get used to a work 2 get 1 day off routine!

Sounds like fun. I think I need a trip to the mall too! I’m tired of sorting stuff out around here.

Glad to hear of yet another parent that gets annoyed by her child(ren)! For the longest time I thought I was a horrible mother. Pshaw!

Sounds like a lovely weekend and I am jealous that your hubby buys the girls clothes. It is ALL ME ALL THE TIME when it comes to that stuff.

hi Janice,
Great post and pics! Steve, the trade show guru
What an awesome weekend! Thanks for sharing.
I remember the parrot phase. And I can believe that kids would find a “tractor” shuttle to be awesome… mine would still agree. And I think my kids would love your version of “camping”.

I am a bad mother, never took my kids camping, even in the backyard. Bugs are out there. Pffft.
