Motivation Monday – February 15, 2010

This is my Mamavation post for February 15, 2010.

Two weeks ago I was struggling. Hubby was travelling, I injured my calf, I was PMS‘ing, my weight loss was hitting a plateau… There were so many excuses and reasons to give up. But I didn’t. At the encouragement of the Mamavation Sista’s, I kept on pushing through and this past week I stepped up the intensity of my 1/2 marathon training by running each run FAST and getting up early to swim two mornings this week. I should have gotten injured this week with all the training, but I didn’t – you know why?

Yummy Veggies

I ate. And I ate well. You see, we’re having a Healthy Eating Challenge at work. We’re tracking how many servings of fruits & veggies we eat each day as we strive to meet the amounts reccommended by Health Canada: 7-8 servings for women and 8-10 servings for men. I met the reccommended amounts every day this past week. It wasn’t easy – I’ve eaten an enormous amount of salads, bananas, carrots and other fruits. The toilet and I have been best friends :)

I’ve trained for, and ran several marathons and half-marathons before, but I’ve never ever paid attention to the role nutrition plays in my training. I figured I was burning tons of calories training and could eat whatever I wanted. I never realized until this week how much fuelling my body properly helps with recovery and keeping my legs & mind feeling “fresh”. Every run this week has felt effortless! In fact, on Wednesday I set a personal best that I shared in my first vlog. I ran 6km at a pace of 5:16/km. I’ve only maintained that pace for that distance once in my life – and that was over 6 yrs ago (when I was much younger, and didn’t have any kids).

The increased running intensity, swimming, yoga and healthy eating MAJORLY paid off this week: according to Wii Fit I lost 4.6 lbs last week! 😮

(BTW-here’s instructions on how you can create one of these charts for yourself)

I totally broke through my plateau and I’m well on my way to continuing the journey to my wedding weight! I only have 6 lbs to go! I can possibly finish losing the whole she-bang by our anniversary! Yay!

I couldn’ve done this alone. I know a lot about health, nutrition, training etc.. But I struggle with motivating myself to apply my knowledge. I’m human too. I have stress, emotions, PMS and all that other stuff. I’m so thankful to have all of you helping me! All of the Mamavation Sista’s have been so supportive and inspiring! Reading everyone’s progress, struggles and triumphs each week has helped me in a way that I just can’t put into words. I’m so thankful to everyone for helping me become the best me that I can be! Thanks everyone!

To challenge and inspire you, I’m having a Healthy Challenge!

I Have TOO Much

This year my new Year’s resolutions centred around one basic theme:

I HAVE TOO MUCH

  • too much extra weight
  • too much debt
  • too much stuff

So I set resolutions in an effort to “Trim the Fat”:

  • Lose weight (10-15lbs) by running 4 times a week, completing a 10K and maybe even a 1/2 marathon.
  • Reduce our debt – get a line of credit to pay off credit cards, cut the cards up and begin to make some big payments!
  • Have a garage sale and sell all of the baby crap and clutter!
  • Work harder at work – ask more questions, get involved and do more!

Now that it’s February, most people have long forgotten the resolutions they made (if they even bothered to make any).  But this year I’m keeping mine.  Want proof?

Last month, according to NikePlus I ran 11 times – though my training journal at sweat365.com disagrees (it says I ran 10 times) and I would further disagree – I distinctly remember that I ran twice without my iPod and therefore not getting credit for my run, so make that 13 times.  (Hopefully next month I’ll do a better job of tracking my runs).

According to my Wii Fit I’ve lost a grand total of 3 lbs.  This totally sucks – I ate really healthy, said no to cake and ran more this past month than I did all of last year.  Which means I totally have to step this up by adding more.  More running, some swimming and some core strengthening.  Which is why I set this month’s goal on NikePlus to run 16 times, which is in line with my resolution.  I’m also going to swim 2 nights a week, Monday and Wednesday nights, so you may see less of me on here as I strive for there to actually be less of me.  Before I cuddle up to my laptop boyfriend I will spend some time doing some core strengthening (I may have to visit some fitness websites for some ideas).

My second resolution was to decrease our debt.  What I didn’t mention is that my hubby and I haven’t filed our taxes since 2003.  Yes – you read that right – I said 2003.  Now you would think the government would be all over us like a fat kid on a smartie (an M&M for all you American folk ’cause apparently you don’t know what the f–k a Smartie is), but they aren’t.  Yes the government generally leave you alone when they owe YOU money.  Unfortunately filing taxes from past years is a royal pain in the arse.  So I called up Intuit, those kind folk who make QuickTax and asked where I could buy QuickTax 2004, 2005, 2006, & 2007.  Intuit is one kick a$$ company because you know what they told me?  They said if I buy QuickTax 2008 and provide them with my order # they would provide me with the download links and activation codes for ALL of the software that I need!  Yes INTUIT YOU ROCK!  So that’s what I did and now I’m the proud new owner of QuickTax 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 & 2008!!!  Happy Dance!  So guess what?  i have a hot date with my laptop boyfriend this weekend to do our taxes and then send away for the oodles of cash the government owes us (I estimate this to be in the ~$5,000.00 range).  Not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things, but enough to make a bit of a dent in our debt.  I’m well on my way to accomplishing resolution #2.

Resolution #3 was to get rid of the baby crap – unfortunately yard sales in 4 feet of snow don’t do well so that resolution is on hold until Spring (though i hear Spring will be coming soon ’cause our good friends the groundhogs saw their shadows this year).

Resolution #4 was to work harder.  I’m happy to say I wasn’t late for work even once last month (and that’s sayin’ alot ’cause we sure have gotten a shitload of snow this month).  I’ve even registered for a college night school course in my field.  Every Thursday night I get to spend 3 hours being bored to tears and discussing “Supply Chain Management” with 8 of my peers.  My class started last week and I’m already behind on my homework (my text book that I ordered online hasn’t arrived yet).  Sigh.

Yes – with 1 month down this year, and eleven more to go, I’m off to a great start.  How are you doing with your resolutions?

Thanks for stopping by!

Wii Please Make My Pants Fit

muffin-top My pants are too tight.  In fact, as I type this the top button on my pants is threatening to pop off.  I over ate this fall and holiday season.  Plain and simple.  I ate too much and exercised too little.  That’s how weight gain happens.  Unfortunately Oprah sugar-coated it yesterday on her first episode of the year, the first of her "Best Life" series of episodes.  (Did you watch it?).  She insinuated that her own weight gain was due to thyroid problems and possibly due to depression.  Oprah may be making excuses for herself but I’m not.  I’ll say it again – I ate too much and excerised too little.

But that’s all changing….

Over the past week I’ve ran a total of 5 times, logging in 19.35 km and burning appx. 1179 calories.  I’ve also used my Wii Fit twice.  Our scale says that over the past week I’ve gained 6lbs, so imagine my surprise today when the results of the Wii Fit body test indicated that I’ve LOST 2lbs.  Yay!  Anyone want my scale?  It seems to be broken.

I’ve also begun to use the Wii Fit more.  OY!  Boy do I ever hurt afterwards!  I needed to take a day off running once this week just because it hurt too much to even breathe.  I soooooo hope this new routine of using my Wi Fit and running on my lunches will help me to lose weight and be more healthy.

Wii… make my pants Fit again – PLEASE!

ORN: No run today – just a good 20 min workout on my Wii Fit
