The Marathon

(As you can tell, I had a conversation with someone today that has sparked this little rant)…

I have to laugh. I call myself a marathon runner. Meaning, I run marathons you know, the ONLY kind 42.2K. But many people have said to me that they run marathons too, and that their personal best time is 32 min… 32 min! 😯 WTF? The WORLD RECORD for women was set by Paula Radcliffe at 2 hours, 15 min and 25 secs! 😆 So just what do they mean? They mean 5K races, or even 10 K races. THAT my dear friend, is not a marathon. It’s like calling yourself an Iron Man even though you’ve never done an Iron Man distance triathlon (3.85K swim, 180K bike, 42.2K run), in fact you may have only done a Sprint distance tri, or even an Olympic distance tri. I actually had a boss that told me he did an Iron Man in 3 hours (the men’s record is seven hours, 50 minutes and 27 seconds). I asked him why he wasn’t an elite, sponsored athlete instead of managing a bar… Needless to say he stopped scheduling me to work shortly after that discussion.

Anyways, YES! You can call yourself a runner, or even a triathlete. But no, don’t diminish the efforts of others that CAN go the distance by calling your 5K a marathon. Sorry – I just needed to vent. Not that I’ll be doing a marathon anytime soon – my next one is scheduled to be the Alcatel Ottawa Marathon in May of 2006! That’s my “comeback” race.

  1. dude. who in the hell thinks that a 5k or 10k is a marathon? they’re just “distance races.” a marathon is 26.2 miles, period.

i mean, geez… if i ride my bike around the city here, does that qualify me for the Tour de France?

  2. M’eh to me it’s just semantics…I realize the true definition of a marathon includes the specific distance (42 k or whatever), but the word has been adapted to refer to any long distance running situation. I know a lot of people who call 5-10k a ‘marathon,’ and personally I admire anyone who can run even a 5k race! I’m not a runner so I guess it doesn’t bother me as much 😉
