Welcome to GMail Daddy!

Tonight I opened my gmail and found a new message from my mom amongst all the spam I get bombarded with:

gmail logo readerszone thumb Welcome to GMail Daddy!date: January 2009 21:12

subject: Daddy has an email address!

herbxxxxx@gmail.com
Send him a note!

My dad was part of a mass layoff almost two months ago when his company decided to close their Canadian manufacturing facility and only manufacture their products in the US.  Good for the Americans, but bad for my dad.  Fortunately we live in a great country.  As part of his unemployment benefits from our government, my dad gets to take a course on how to find a job.  He goes every day and has been going for over three weeks.  He’s learned some amazing skills like where to find job opportunities, how to network, how to prepare a resume, interview skills and even some basic computer skills.  As part of his course he’s learning how to use email, so my mom set him with a gmail address so he could email his resume.

I think it’s awesome that my dad is learning these skills.  I know he’s incredibly bright, and I know that with his math skills he could do some amazing things.  Being a tradesman for so long has left him without basic computer skills.  I’m looking forward to sending and receiving emails from him – soon enough I may even be tweeting him on Twitter!  LOL!  Now wouldn’t that be something?

    Hey Janice,
My congrats to your dad for getting email, and actually gmail, to be exact, though I’m sorry about his job. Let us know if he joins Twitter. I have yet to do that, and I wouldn’t be surprised if my kids beat me to that one. I think I know a little how your dad feels when it comes to all this new fangled technology!

no way Steve! I never send my dd spam! I didn’t set him up with gmail – his teacher did. He’s learning how to google! Eek, methinks we need to get him his own laptop! Bad enough that I share mine with my son!

That’s actually a good idea mom – maybe it will encourage him to use computers more. He could look up all kinds of amazing curling and baseball facts to share with us – LOL!
      Thanks for stopping by!

It’s bad that your dad lost his job, but at east he is making the best of it. If you introduce him to Ebay let me know … I might be able to help him out there a little bit.

That is so awesome! I love it! Congratulations to your dad, and I love that the program is an opportunity for him. Here in the US, I don’t think there’s anything that can help with our unemployment. I do hope he gets a new job soon and that he gets to utilize his skills!

P.S. liberty4all from twitter, and I wrote about you in my last post!

    Hi Janice

Do you use GMail? I’m just curious. If you do, how is it possible that you are being bombarded by spam?

I’d find that incredibly odd, since GMail has by far, the best spam filter known to man! Or is it just Dear ol’ Dad that has the GMail? Why aren’t you using it yet? Everyone should! And no, I don’t work for them…I just know what an incredible headache spam can be, and I’m like, one their biggest advocates!
